A Few Myths You Might Believe

  • My hair is frizzy, so they must be damaged but it is not always the case. Frizz is super common in wavy hair, even when they are healthy.
  • If my hairs are not curly, they must be straight. But wavy hair has its own category and behaviors that are very different from both straight and curly hair.
  • Wavy hair can’t be fine or soft. But they absolutely can, you can have fine wavy hair that tangles easily and still is not straight.

So, if your hair dries flat and shiny without any effort, it’s likely straight hair.

But if it forms bends, waves, or flips at the ends, even inconsistently then there might be a good chance you are working with natural waves.

💡 Key Differences at a Glance
Need Straight Hair Wavy Hair
Frizz Control Not a major issue unless damaged Needs regular moisture + frizz-taming products
Volume Needs lift at roots Has natural volume but needs shape
Moisture Too much makes it oily Needs moisture to stay defined and soft
Styling Lightweight, minimal product Benefit from scrunching and diffusing

How to Know Your True Hair Type?

If you are still unsure whether your hair is straight or wavy, then don’t worry you are not doing anything wrong because it is actually harder to tell than people think.

Hair type is not just about how your hair looks when it is wet or styled, it is about what it naturally does when left alone.

Here’s how you can figure out your true texture:

Step 1 : Wash and Air-Dry

First of all you have to clean your hair and don’t use heavy conditioners or styling products.

Then let your hair air-dry naturally.

  • If your hair dry flat, smooth, and straight from root to tips, then you likely have straight hair.
  • If they dry with some bend, twist, or “S” shapes, even if they are soft or uneven you may likely have wavy hair.

Step 2: The Scrunch Test

While your hair is damp, scrunch it lightly with your hands. If nothing happens and it just falls straight again, then it’s probably straight.

If it holds any kind of shape, wave, or texture, that’s your natural wave trying to show up.

Step 3: Look at Roots and Ends

Some people have mixed textures like straight roots and wavy ends. That still counts as wavy. Many wavy types (like 2A or 2B) don’t wave until mid-length or below.

Step 4: Know the Hair Typing System

The hairs are actually categorized like this:

  • Type 1: Straight (1A: flat & fine, 1B: fuller body, 1C: coarse and thick)
  • Type 2: Wavy (2A: loose & fine, 2B: more defined S-waves, 2C: thick with some frizz)

You don’t have to memorize the chart. Just know that wavy hair comes in levels and even soft waves still count.

Step 5: Hair Changes Over Time

Your hair might not be the same as it was a few years ago and it is normal.

Hormones, heat styling, weather and damage can all change your texture. You may have had straight hair growing up, but now it is trying to wave or the opposite.

Caring for Wavy Hair Vs Straight Hair

So, once you know your true hair type, then it will be easy for you to figure out how to take care of them.

Because what works for straight hair doesn’t always work for wavy hair.

Let’s break it down:

Haircare Routine by Hair Type
Haircare Focus Straight Hair Wavy Hair
Shampoo & Conditioner
Routine Your scalp tends to get oily faster, so go for a lightweight shampoo that cleans without stripping. Avoid thick, creamy conditioners – they can weigh your hair down. Wavy hair often struggles with frizz and dryness, even if it doesn’t look curly. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that smooths but doesn’t flatten your waves.
Tip ✔ Look for: “volumizing”, “clarifying”, “light moisture” ✔ Look for: “anti-frizz”, “hydrating”, “curl-enhancing”
Leave-In Products
Routine Use very light leave-in sprays or serums. Oils or creams are usually too heavy unless your hair is thick. Focus on smoothness and shine. Use light creams, mousses, or gels to define your waves without crunch. They help reduce frizz and hold your pattern.
Styling Tips
Routine Blow-dry with a round brush for volume, or air dry for a sleek look. Avoid overusing product – it can make your hair greasy quickly. Scrunch damp hair with product and air dry or diffuse with low heat. Never brush dry waves – it ruins the pattern and adds frizz.

What If My Hair Is Both?

If your hair feels straight in some areas and wavy in others then welcome to the club, you are not alone.

Having more than one hair texture on your head is normal, and it is something a lot of people deal with even if no one talks about it.

You might feel your hair root lay flat, but the ends flip or wave. Or maybe one side dries wavy while the other stays mostly straight.

It could become frustrating because you couldn’t figure out whether to follow the straight hair routine or wavy hair routine.

Blended Routine Work Best

You can try to combine the lightweight smoothing products (for the flatter areas) with light curl creams or mousses (for the wavy parts).

You don’t have to load up your head just apply different products to different sections based on what each part of your hair actually need.

Haircut Matters More Than You Think

Mixed textures can easily look bulky, shapeless or uneven. If you try a layered haircut, it will help to bring out your waves while balance the straight areas.

Don’t Chase Perfection

Here’s the truth: that nobody’s hair is perfect. Not even celebrities. So, stop trying to make your hair do one thing from root to end.

You should focus on working with your natural variation, not fighting it.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day your hair doesn’t have to fit into a perfect category and it doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

You just have to understand your hair texture to make it easy for yourself to follow the hair care routine.
